Need of an hour: Fisheries Management

Years of data have shown that fishing and fishery industry has grown tremendously over time and place due to its high demand accruing to various social and economic benefits. Millions of people rely on fishing as a source of earning activity nation and abroad, with its production increasing year by year. This activity not just accrues to low or mid income group but also applies to big industrialists, therefore it is of prime importance that this industry is well regulated with rules and policy guidelines to maintain its smooth functioning with effective management. It is thus essential that resources are not over exploited, technologies are well developed, which avoid the future failure of the industry. 

A well documented planed procedural steps with guided rules and authorities for each region should be organised, which does not cause any hindrances in implementing and executing the policies. The objectives should be clearly stated keeping in mind the economic, social and political impacts the industry can have. The main task of the authority lies in maintaining this scarce natural resource, to avoid its depletion and for its sustenance for next generations. This requires active participation of both the central and the state government authorities of the nation, with its legal mandate required. Management not only requires controlling the manual constraints in line but also should look after the environmental constraints which this industry is exposed to, which helps to makes fishing as a great source of earning activity for present and future generations.
