About the Boat

Always Wet Fishing uses a 2002 Luhrs 40 Express Sport Fish. We chose this boat for many reasons. First it is versatile. It is big enough to be comfortable in the ocean. The hull is one of the best known in the industry for taking rough seas. While substantial in size, its center position for the helm and its location near the cockpit makes it easy for the captain to monitor the action and assist if needed. It also makes it possible to fish this boat without a mate if needed. We always take a mate in the ocean and usually in the bay. But if we ever had to leave the dock without a mate we could. The Luhrs 40 can be operated comfortably with just one person should the mate become ill or injured.

The best thing about the Luhrs 40 is that it was built for fishing. While traditional Sport Fish Yachts have a large salon to allow the luxury of home on the water, the Luhrs Convertible uses this space for fishing and to keep the entire crew close to the action. It still has an air conditioned galley and salon below, with sleeping quarters, television, microwave oven and stove as well as a head with a shower and hot water. But the majority of the boat is designed for catching fish. The express layout allows everyone on board to have a 360 degree view of the fishing and the wonders of the ocean, bays and rivers as well as magnificent sunrises and incredible shorelines.

Always Wet has over 30 rods on the boat for different types of fishing, and has a freezer on board for bait. The tuna tower gives you a great point of view from which to see fish and bait breaking in the distance. This Luhrs has all the latest electronics, including the Furuno Nav Net system linked to a sea surface temperature satellite feed. We also have a satellite phone, so you can call your friends to meet you at the dock and see the big one.

Always Wet has the required safety equipment required by the US Coast Guard as well as an AED or defibrillator, first aid, CPR masks, EPIRB and VHF radio distress emergency locator signal. When 60 miles from shore you need to know your crew is trained and has the equipment to deal with all types of medical emergencies. Big fish pull hard and work your body. Fish almost never hurt you with a trained crew to handle them, but it can happen. These guys really don’t want to get in the boat, and they are not happy when it happens. It pays to be safe.

The twin 480E Cummins engines produce 960 horsepower that drives this boat in excess of 30 knots and cruises at 28 knots plus. This allows us to minimize travel time to the fish and increase fishing time. This power plant is so efficient; we use a fraction of the fuel the big boys do burning a scarce 20 to 22 gallons per hour per engine at cruise. With 48 mile radar we can track storms, and the boat is fast enough to avoid most of them.
